Some cleaned up sketches of Mal.

Well. I'll be bringing work with me to Italy, but will probably have to stick with sketches. Not sure I can set up a painting station there.

Here's two cleaned up panel sketches of Mal.

This is probably the last blog entry of this year(!) as I won't be able to scan and post images whilst in Italy...

... Sooo!

Merry Christmas! God Jul! Buon Natale!

See you lot in a week or so. (Hopefully with lotsa sketches!)

The last portraits before Italy!

Eek. Yesterday's meetup with friends and family.

Today's portrait of a very cold UK.

Tomorrow we will be off to Italy, and will stay there for over a week. How I'm supposed to be able to do daily portraits there remains to be seen... Maybe I'll lock myself up in the loo for 10 minutes everyday and just use the mirror there(!)

Hopefully the family won't think I'm strange. Or vain. Err. I'll have to explain the challenge to them, I think :D

Yesterday's incredibly ugly portrait! :D

Bwahaha :D To celebrate getting my lovely period with all its accessories, I have a portrait which shows how beautiful I am.

Very busy today with Tom's family and will be busy until it's time to go to Italy over xmas and new years.

Page 13 sketch.

Barely visible sketch of page 13.
Trying to think of different borders. Like using smoke.
In some others I'm not using any borders at all, but am a bit scared of that. Do want to get some Will Eisner confidence in showing comic stories without the clear panels :P

Page 8. Learning lots while painting.

A very wonky looking page 8. I think there's a difference between stylishly-wonky and... Just bad-wonky.

I'm afraid I've got the latter :P

Will pause with this one a bit and come back to it later.

Post dissertation portraits.

Day after dissertation.

Might start including hands more. Always need to practice hands.

Today's (Weee!) portrait.

A doodle portrait today, showing my feelings after handing in the dissertation.
Excuse the language, but I felt it was needed :D

Today's (stressed out) portrait.

Dissertation deadline tomorrow....

Pigface and JenJen!

My friend pigface has me in his comic, represented as the birdie JenJen, doing artwork with my WINGS! :O

My favourite is the middle one where I go 'sploooosh'! (also note the little bird prints in the water colour)

And here's an older one from this entry: Click me if you wish!

Discovering a written down speech by Neil Gaiman.

Full speech can be found here: Click me!, and I highly recommend reading it if you're interested in the world of comics/graphic novels.

Here are some outtakes that made me sit up a bit straighter in my chair when I first read them.

"My first piece of advice is this:

Ignore all advice.

In my experience, most interesting art gets made by people who don't know the rules, and have no idea that certain things simply aren't done: so they do them. Transgress. Break things. Have too much fun."

The last short sentence really got to me. I've received comments that I can be a bit 'too' energetic in my approach and that I don't know when to stop.

Although I will listen to advice while I am still at Uni (I mean, why am I there otherwise?), it remains to be seen whether I will do something completely different when left to my own devices.

"As a solution to various problems you may encounter upon the way, let me suggest this:

Make Good Art.

It's very simple. But it seems to work. Life fallen apart? Make good art. True love ran off with the milkman? Make good art. Bank foreclosing? Make good art.

Keep moving, learn new skills. Enjoy yourself."

I've been very self-conscious about creating a 'proper' comic of my life. I've done a lot of small separate ones that depict little events, but never anything that shows -everything-. The more I itch to draw, the more I think: 'Let's just do it. fuck what other people might think.'

Easier said than done, obviously. Hence why nothing's been done. I don't Keep Moving on that front.. :P Perhaps it needs to be done in a sort of David Mack 'Kabuki' way. Where he uses metaphors to allow himself to draw his own thoughts and diary.

"Be proud of your mistakes. Well, proud may not be exactly the right word, but respect them, treasure them, be kind to them, learn from them.

And, more than that, and more important than that, make them.

Make mistakes. Make great mistakes, make wonderful mistakes, make glorious mistakes. Better to make a hundred mistakes than to stare at a blank piece of paper too scared to do anything wrong, too scared to do anything.

Critics will grumble. Of course they will. That's one of the functions of critics. As an artist it's your job to give them ulcers, and perhaps even something to get apoplectic about.

Oh god! I just want to get going already!
*stares at dissertation*

.... Sigh.

Coldsore portrait!

Both today and yesterday have been spent working on the dissertation. So not much is going to be done, art-wise. I need to get this essay done and dusted.

Woke up with a lovely coldsore this morning too. Mmmmm. Yum.
Couldn't give a darn about my looks today though.

.. errr. Not that I usually spend hours on my looks anyway (as is very apparent with my portraits. Headband and hoodie. That's me :P)

Self indulgent, but slightly off!

Decided to doodle some evils before heading off to Uni, but noticed that the proportions are ever so slightly off when I scanned it.

Don't have time to fix it tho. Gotta run!

Today's reflective portrait.

Got into a discussion about my slightly obsessive drawing habits. "It's like your drug."
You know it's becoming a proper obsession when other things get pushed aside.
It's very easy to get into and very unpleasant to be pulled out of.

Not sure how to otherwise explain it :P

Page 6 and 7 progress.

Painting in progress.

A very sketchy one... But based on my luvh for Scarecrow in Batman Begins.
I'd be in his madhouse anyday! <3

... Well. maybe not.

Inspired by Scarecrow.

Just watched Batman Begins for the... hum... 4th time? That's a lot for me. I don't tend to rewatch movies.

I do LOVE Cillian Murphy as the Scarecrow though! He's a fantastic character with amazing eyes that just scream 'cold psychopath'.

Had to do a little speedpaint from my head.

I've been very busy with the dissertation and catching a cold. So updating the blog hasn't been on my agenda, really :(

But here's some portraits.

4th of Dec.

5th of Dec. Cold breakout..!

Unexpected return...!

Well. Erm. I got back home yesterday evening instead of today. Reason being a mixup of dates with my dissertation hand-in. I won't bore you with the details. I think my portraits should be able to show a little bit of my feelings :D

That... combined with a purchase of my very first Doc Martens which I decided to 'walk into' while in London. This resulted in the boots literally drawing blood.

It's.. worth.. it... though..!

Anywho! I shall be a bit occupied this weekend, trying to get my dissertation sorted out.

Today's portrait!

Which really includes a friend of mine :D (Hello Mithreas!)

Based on our trip to the Natural History Museum.

First day in London, baybeh!

Dearest blog! I shall be in London until Friday, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to update everyday with sketches (that includes the portraits). So even though I'll obviously will be doing the portraits, I'll prolly have to upload them all when I get back home on Friday evening.

But I was lucky enough to be allowed to scan my sketches from my first visit to the natural history Museum :D Thank you El for lending your computer to me! <3

Here's some sketches..! Some of them.. Errr. Quite rubbish, but it's educational. Also didn't clean them up one bit in Photoshop. Anyway..!
